About Lieven D.

Lieven Dermaut was born July 14th 1965 in the city of Kortrijk.

He has always been drawing and painting with
  a kind of regular discipline that enabled him to continually grow , discover and develop.

The picture gallery gives you a partly impression of his drawings and paintings: an astonishing collection of scenes, drawn by means of feathers and coloured by aquarelles.

The ambiguity of the work, combined  with the old, yet familiar universal symbols will unveil  an out of the ordinary, but  trustworthy  reality.  Scenes from the everyday human world are depicted ; love, friendship, trust and sincerity, but also decay, treason,  distrust, trickyness and indecency!
Looking closer at the works, one will almost surely slow down pace and enjoy them with a complacent
smile…

In 2003, Lieven D. undertook a commitment with wood;
  wooden nature gave him room for  inspiration and he would give wood a glittering goal!

Nowadays, while trees are threatened  world-wide by lumbering, air- and soil pollution and by irrational mismanagement out of unilateral economical interests, the artistically minded and inspired wood engraving is a tribute to the tree itself.
Wood engraving definitely is a challenge!
Drawing a line into wood surely is totally different to drawing a line onto paper; burins, gouges and all sorts of chisels have replaced the pencils, the pens and the brushes.
Contrary to the manipulation
  of paper and canvas, wood engravings demand a lot of muscular strength.
Moreover, there’s a variety of woods;
 some types are very suitable provided that you keep on working fully concentrated and devoted;  Lieven experienced also other types that  have a structure that is too fibrous, too frayes, too soft…

The picture gallery also gives you an idea of the wood sculptures.
Of course, a visit in person
  to the paintings as well as the drawings and the sculptures would be more powerful  than a visit at the picture gallery on the site.
The scenes unveil numerous details and winks;
 they depict a dimension, fully observed by Lieven D. and in which he feels settled down.
It also is in that dimension that you’ll find the wood sculptures with an unique symbiosis between tree and artist, between nature and culture.

His vast body of work is the result of thousands of working hours.

Lieven D.  exhibits only now and then; his works want to be seen while he is not so keen at leaving his atelier!

You are welcome in his gallery and atelier.
Please make an appointment in advance.
